Woman who saved Anne Frank's diary dies

The woman who saved Anne Frank's diary from the Nazis, Miep Gies, died on Monday after a brief illness, her website announced. She was 100 years old.

Gies was the last surviving and best known of the group who helped Frank's family hide from the Nazis. She collected and hid the teenager's diary after the German secret police discovered their hiding place in an Amsterdam office building.

Anne died from disease at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, but her father Otto returned from Auschwitz and Gies gave him his daughter's diary.

The teenager's memoir, first published in 1947, became one of the most renowned accounts of Jews hiding from Nazi persecution.

Born Hermine (Miep) Santruschitz in Vienna in 1909, she moved to the Netherlands at age 11, according to a biography published on her website: www.miepgies.nl.

In 1933, she began working for Otto Frank at his Opekta trading company.

At great risk to her own safety, she helped bring food to the Franks and another family who went into hiding in a secret annex of Opekta's office building from 1942 until their discovery and arrest in 1944.

Gies received numerous honours for her role, including from Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre.

====================

She would be honoured as a Tzadik in Israel. How gutsy a woman indeed!
Glory to ABBA!

Israel sorry for humiliating Turkish envoy, but doesn't regret it

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Wednesday issued a letter of apology for humiliating the Turkish ambassador to Israel, but later defended his actions and insisted they would benefit the Jewish state.

On Monday, Ayalon had summoned the Turkish envoy to the Knesset to reprimand him over a new Turkish television series that depicted Israeli Mossad agents as baby-snatchers. To drive home his point, Ayalon and his aide sat in taller chairs while the Turkish ambassador sat on a lower couch, and then invited the press to film the meeting.

Turkey issued an ultimatum that Ayalon either apologize by Wednesday or the ambassador would be recalled to Ankara.

In his letter, Ayalon apologized for "the way Israel's protest was presented" and promised that future disputes would be "solved in a respectful and mutual manner between the two governments."

A day later, Ayalon's office issued a statement to the Israeli press insisted that "Israel will benefit from the manner in which MK Ayalon handled the crisis. The result is that today Turkey will be more careful with its statements."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that while he supported the essence of Ayalon's protest, he had been unhappy with its implementation and was satisfied with Ayalon's apology.

Meanwhile, major Turkish production company Pana Films is working on a new anti-Israel movie that Turkish media said is certain to anger Israel even further.

Members of the film's production crew told Turkish newspapers that the provocative imagery in the new film will go far beyond the way Israel was portrayed in last week's television series, and that it will "reveal the true face of Israel, and in accordance, the relations between it and Turkey will deteriorate even further."

« Lest we forget [who owns] Jerusalem Recipe for a new blood libel
 Monday 31 May 2010

I love watching Israel being exonerated. It has happened time and again over the years: Israel’s enemies falsely level blood libels against the Jews, the reflexively anti-Israel news media snatches and runs – exhilarated – with the story, spreading the perverted version of events far and wide. Sooner or later their “reporting” is shown to be inaccurate if not downright false, and Israel is absolved.

Not that this makes much difference to those who hate Zion(ism) – of course. But it is music to the ears and eyes of those who love Israel.

The attempt Monday morning by Israel’s navy to enforce its blockade of the Gaza Strip terrorist mini-state is just the latest example. There is no telling what distortions you may have heard, but let me lay out how it was.

Days ago two organizations – the Free Gaza Movement and the Turkish Insani Yardim Vakfi (IHH) – the latter known to have ties with internationally-recognized terrorist organizations – began making announcing their intention to sail a flotilla of boats towards Gaza in an attempt to breach the Israeli government’s blockade of the Strip.

Israel, which banned all maritime traffic to Gaza in an effort to limit the quantity of weapons being shipped into the Hamas stronghold (from which thousands of rockets have been fired upon Israeli civilian population centers) made it clear it would not permit the ships to reach Gaza.

The government of Turkey – an erstwhile ally of Israel’s that has become increasingly antagonistic towards the Jewish state in recent months, while moving deeper into the orbit of Ahmadinejad’s Iran – stepped into the developing fray, warning Israel not to try and stop the boats.

Emboldened by this, the “activists” sailed to Cyprus and prepared for the final leg of their voyage to Gaza. Israel, making every effort to avoid a confrontation – short of backing down – invited the demonstrators to sail into Ashdod and have their humanitarian supplies shipped overland to Gaza from there. Israel’s officials outlined in detail the exact course of action they would follow (which they did) to foil the flotilla’s purposes. The “peaceniks” rejected the offer and paid the warning no heed. And on Sunday evening set course for Gaza.

This was Israel’s response: Naval ships intercepted the flotilla and Israeli commandos, armed with paintball rifles (!) and wearing side arms strictly for self-defense, slid to the deck of the largest ship – the Mavi Marmara. Their purpose: to tell the protesters one last time that they would not be allowed into Gaza.

A few minutes later a reporter for Turkish television was heard screaming into his camera: “These savages are killing people here, please help!”

The news flashed around the globe. That is to say, an uninformed and misinformed version of what was happening flew from network to network.

The headlines and reporting, condemnations and outrage voiced on the morning of May 31, 2010 were predictable.

Israel had attacked a sailing flotilla of peace activists who were simply seeking to take humanitarian aid to the “suffering” people of the Gaza Strip.

IDF soldiers had opened fire indiscriminately on the unresisting protesters, killing up to 19 of them.

The Israelis had “dropped from a helicopter onto the deck of a Turkish ship [and] immediately opened fire on unarmed civilians.”

Israel had deliberately “targeted innocent civilians,” claimed trouble-making Turkey’s foreign ministry, warning of “irreparable consequences” to the two countries’ relations.

Israel had committed “a massacre,” cried PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas, while his mouthpiece, Sa’eb Erekat, pronounced Israel guilty of “another war crime.” For good measure the PA/PLO immediately declared three days of mourning for those killed.

Screamed the BBC: “Death as Israel storms aid ship.”

CNN: “Israeli commandos killed at least 10 people in pre-dawn raids on a flotilla of six ships carrying aid for the Palestinian territory of Gaza…”

The network also gave a platform to Gaza-based Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri who said: “The Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla is an ugly crime and against international law and this reflects the nature of the criminal Israeli occupation.”

Deceived (willingly?) by these hysterical headlines, officials like Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs, and senior UN figures Robert Serry and Filippo Grandi laid the blame for the whole affair at Israel’s door and demanded Israel immediately lift the blockade of Gaza.

The new British Foreign minister John Haig also called on Israel to open all the crossings for free flow of aid into Gaza.

Deputy United Nations chief Oscar Fernandez-Taranco said the deaths could have been avoided if only Israel had lifted its blockade. Needless to say, the fact that the deaths could have been avoided if the “activists” had kept their noses out of Israel’s affairs never entered the man’s head.

Sky News’ Dominic Waghorn said Israel had “handed an enormous PR victory to the Hamas.” Waghorn is oblivious, it seems, to the fact that it is his and other international journalists’ skewed coverage of what occurred that was providing that very PR victory for their Arab friends.

What really happened? Israel has plenty of footage revealing the truth.

You can view the sickening scenes here , and here, and here.

The “peace-loving” protesters tried to lynch the Israeli soldiers. As each paintball-armed soldier reached the deck he was leaped upon by iron-bar wielding, chair-smashing, knife-stabbing and even gun-firing “activists.”

Some soldiers were beaten senseless. One was dropped headfirst onto a lower deck, sustaining serious injuries. Another was stabbed, his pistol was grabbed from him and used to fire at the Israelis. Stun grenades and firebombs were thrown at the soldiers.

When they eventually opened fire, it was only to defend themselves, and we still do not know how many of those killed were killed by the soldiers or by the terrorists (because that’s what they were) who were trying to shoot the IDF men.

This is the real story. But don’t hold your breath waiting for the currently convening emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to find in Israel’s favor.

When it comes to the state of the hated Jews, the truth rarely finds traction in the court of international opinion. Thanks largely to the media, many millions of people are primed and ready to believe the worst about the actions of Israel’s Jews. For them it’s a case of: why let the facts get in the way of a convenient and expedient story that further feeds their prejudices and satisfies their twisted desires.

Israel expected protestors, but found terrorists aboard aid ship

A flood of information and contradicting reports have been hitting the media since Israel forcefully halted a flotilla of ships attempting to break the maritime blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Monday. Israel Today will try to break down that information and rebut any false claims so as to paint a clearer picture of what really happened for our readers.

Israel intercepts the ships

Israeli warships made contact with the six ships making up the first wave of the flotilla organized by the Free Gaza Movement late Sunday night. Israeli officers contacted the ships' captains by radio and ordered them to follow the Israeli ships back to port. The aid ship captains refused.

The Israeli army said that it expected the ships to refuse to return to port, and were ready with commando teams to board and seize control of the aid ships.

Israeli army officials later acknowledged that they had underestimated what they would face and had equipped their commandoes with only paintball guns for crowd dispersal and sidearms for self-defense as a last resort. The Israelis expected to face protestors, not armed and violent fighters.

Battle on the high seas

In a news brief published just after Israeli troops started boarding the ships, the Free Gaza Movement claimed that the crew of the Miva Marmara, the only ship that saw violence, was peacefully sleeping when the Israelis touched down on deck and opened fire indiscriminately.

The following video released by the IDF clearly shows that the crew of the Marmara was not sleeping, but rather was eagerly waiting and ready for a fight:

In the video, the Israeli commandoes are shown sliding onto the upper deck of the Marmara one-by-one, each soldier being grabbed and lynched as he reached the ship. The first soldier was severely beaten and then thrown over the side to a lower deck. He sustained serious injuries.

Knives, metal poles, baseball bats, firebombs, stun grenades and even firearms were also used against the commandoes in a clearly premeditated ambush.

In this video, one of the "peace" activists is seen stabbing an Israeli soldier in the back:

An Israeli soldier who took part in the raid gave this video testimony noting that he and his comrades were taken totally by surprise by the level of violence:

Only after the Israeli troops realized they were under life-threatening attack did they request authorization to use their sidearms in self-defense.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Chief of Staff Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi debunked claims that Israel was the one bent on violence by pointing out that the other five ships were seized without a shot being fired.

Why was the Marmara different?

So, why did a violent confrontation take place only on one of the ships, the Miva Marmara?

The answer was made clear later in the day when it was revealed that the Marmara was controlled by and carrying most of the activists belonging to the IHH, a violent Turkish organization that supports Islamic terrorism.

The IHH, it turns out, had co-sponsored and organized the flotilla along with the Free Gaza Movement. This video shows IHH activists and their supporters chanting violent anti-Jewish slogans prior to the flotilla's launch from Turkey:

YouTube-Gaza flotilla participants invoked killing of Jews

These guys were looking for a fight before ever setting off. As evidenced by this behavior and the presence of so many weapons onboard the Marmara, the IHH activists never intended to reach Gaza. Their goal was to pick a very public fight with Israel, and use the outcome to further besmirch the Jewish state in the media.

In that way, the tactics of the IHH mirror those of Hamas, which also publicly supported the flotilla and sent representatives to Turkey to bless its embarkation.

The legitimacy of the Israeli blockade

With details of Monday's battle cleared up, it is instructive to take a look at the legitimacy of Israel's maritime blockade.

The Free Gaza Movement insists that the blockade is illegal and oppressive, thus necessitating efforts such as its own to bring essential goods to the residents of Gaza.

But Israeli Foreign Ministry legal advisor Sarah Weiss Maudi explained why Israel has every right to impose a maritime blockade on Gaza under international law:

Maritime blockades are a legitimate and recognized measure under international law, and may be implemented as part of an armed conflict at sea [which presently exists between Israel and Hamas].
Under international maritime law, when a maritime blockade is in effect, no vessels can enter the blockaded area. That includes both civilian vessels and enemy vessels. Any vessel that violates or attempts to violate the maritime blockade may be captured or even attacked.

Various naval manuals, including the naval manuals of the US and UK, recognize the maritime blockade as an effective naval measure that can be implemented in times of armed conflict. And those manuals give various criteria for making a blockade valid, including the requirement to give due notice of the blockade. Israel, in accordance with the requirements of international law, has publicized the existence of the blockade currently in effect, and has published the exact coordinates of the blockade via the accepted international professional maritime channels.

Furthermore, just days before the Free Gaza flotilla set off from Turkey, Israel published details of ongoing humanitarian aid shipments to Gaza via southern Israel. The residents of Gaza receive enormous amounts of essential goods, much more than the flotilla could have hoped to deliver.

In fact, enough goods have been delivered over the past 18 months to provide every man, woman and child in Gaza with one ton of humanitarian aid each.

What the media and Free Gaza don't say is that Israel's blockade of Gaza is really a very limited embargo targeting only those items that could and have been used by Hamas and its terrorist allies to prepare rockets and bunkers.

Israel tried to explain this to the Free Gaza Movement, and offered to add the permitted goods they had collected to the daily aid truck convoys. But the activists refused, because actually getting supplies to the residents of Gaza was not their primary objective.

The aftermath

Unfortunately, none of these facts will ultimately make an impact on world leaders, who have already begun to play to Muslim sensitivities and their own anti-Israel biases by demanding commissions of inquiry into the Israeli raid.

The last commission of inquiry ordered against Israel was the UN's Goldstone Commission sent to investigate the month-long Gaza war that ended in January 2009. The commission's conclusions were enormously influenced by unsubstantiated Hamas claims that the investigators failed or refused to demand proof of. And while many of the report's points have since been refuted, the damage to Israel has already been done.

Any commission of inquiry into the raid on the aid flotilla can be expected to reach similar biased conclusions that will lead to demands that Israel unconditionally end its limited embargo of the Gaza Strip, enabling Hamas to once again stockpile weapons that will eventually result in another war.

Top US Democrats: 'Israel Has Right to Defend Itself'by Hana Levi Julian

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went on the offensive Wednesday to defend Israel's right to protect its territorial waters.

Biden told reporters on Wednesday that Israel was within its legal rights in stopping the Turkey-sponsored six-ship flotilla from violating its territorial waters and breaking its naval embargo on Gaza.

Biden said during an interview on the “Charlie Rose” television program, “You can argue whether Israel should have dropped people onto that ship or not, and the – but the truth of the matter is, Israel has a right to know... whether or not arms are being smuggled in.”

Pelosi told reporters, “I know that blockades have consequences. And, again, we all saw this in real time because everyone has a camera, and I think that people make a case on either side as to who was provocative and who was not. But the fact is, this is a terribly regrettable situation. I regret the loss of life first and foremost,” she said, “and again call for a credible and transparent investigation to find out how this came to be.”

Pelosi refused to be drawn into the blame game, and emphasized that “Israel is our friend. I think with Israel we have a very close friendship, and to have a democratic Jewish state in that region is something that has been a goal of our foreign policy. It is something that is based on our national security interest; it is about us as much – even more – than it is about them. We all – many of us here – are striving for a two-state solution,” she added, “but it has to be a solution where there is security for both sides.”

Lieberman: Blockade Removal in Exchange for Shalit Visits

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman commented Thursday that Israel might consider further lifting the blockade if Hamas agrees to allow monthly visits to kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.

Shalit has been held hostage by Hamas terrorists since he was abducted by Hamas terrorists in a deadly cross-border raid by near the Kerem Shalom crossing on June 25, 2006. His condition and whereabouts remain unknown.

US Says Gaza Flotillas "Irresponsible"

The US State Department on Wednesday [June 23] released a statement against additional flotillas to the Gaza Strip, calling them "irresponsible." The statement said: "Mechanisms exist for the transfer of humanitarian assistance to Gaza by member states and groups that want to do so. Direct delivery by sea is neither appropriate nor responsible, and certainly not effective, under the circumstances."

The statement added, "We, along with our partners in the Quartet, urge all those wishing to deliver goods to do so through established channels so that their cargo can be inspected and transferred via land crossings into Gaza. There is no need for unnecessary confrontations, and we, along with our partners in the Quartet, call on all parties to act responsibly in meeting the needs of the people of Gaza."

Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday discussed the matter with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. On Thursday [June 24] he met with US officials, including Vice President Joe Biden, National Security Advisor James Jones, and senior officials in the US military and defense establishment.

Meanwhile, organizers of an Iranian flotilla to Gaza on Thursday announced that the ship that was meant to set sail on Sunday [June 27] will not be departing. In a statement, the organization said the main reason for the cancellation was "the violent and inhumane attitude of the Zionist regime to humanitarian aid."

Also Thursday, hundreds of people in New York City took part in what organizers called the "True Freedom Flotilla" for the release of captive soldier Gilad Shalit, marking four years since he fell captive. The event included a sail along the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty and the UN headquarters. The flotilla included two vessels, each carrying 600 people.

=============================

"Humanitarian" means self-destruction of precious lives, young and old, given by the Almighty Creator;  holding and tormenting captives, their families and loved ones,  as a bargaining tool for murderers who have NO regard for the living, nor for the Eternal One Who will soon be judging
all the deeds of mankind???!!!
Blessings will only come upon those who seek to walk in The Creator of the universe's directions/paths; or will be eternally condemned for non-repentance of evil doings of darkness.
Seek life and blessings,
